Biography

Dr. Dawn M. Adams is a certified adult nurse practitioner, Delegate in the Virginia House for District 68, small business owner, and author. She is the only openly lesbian member of the General Assembly and first and only member of the LGBTQ community to be elected outside of Northern Virginia.

Dr. Adams has thirty-five years of clinical experience in a variety of settings, and has been a pioneer nurse practitioner for each of her employers. As such, she developed the role that led to the expanded utilization of nurse practitioners and growth of the respective programs. She is currently the sole owner and operator of a small telemedicine business dedicated to alternative approaches to pain and life management, including the integration of medical cannabis.

Dr. Adams has spent her career as a fierce patient advocate and more recently a policymaker. As a legislator with the Virginia House of Delegates her committee assignments include Health, Welfare and Institutions, where she is also Chair of Health Profession, General Laws, and Privileges and Elections. She was recently appointed to the Joint Commission on Health Care, the Disability Commission, the Committee on Coal and Energy, and the Joint Subcommittee on Block Grants. In September 2020 she began her tenure as a Board Member for the Virginia Diabetes Council.

Her legislative agenda in 2021 focused extensively on healthcare access and equity for all Virginians.
