Alex will be a key addition to the Georgia State House
Alex Wan was the first openly gay man and first Asian-American to serve on the Atlanta City Council, winning his first term in 2009 and soundly reelected for a second in 2013. During his tenure, Alex was Chair of the Finance-Executive, City Utilities, and Zoning Committees and was elected unanimously as Council President Pro Tempore in 2013.
He is currently the appointed District 4 Citizen Representative to the Atlanta Regional Commission and serves on the boards of directors of the Piedmont Park Conservancy and Live Thrive Atlanta, an environmental sustainability nonprofit.
Alex earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech and master of business administration from the Wharton School of Business. His professional career includes positions at Prudential Investment Corporation, Optima, Inc. (architecture-engineering consulting), Jerusalem House (housing for homeless/low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS), and Emory University. He now serves as Executive Director of Horizons Atlanta, a summer enrichment program nonprofit serving at-risk public school students.
Alex’s community involvement includes service with Georgia Equality, Human Rights Campaign, Leadership Atlanta, Leadership DeKalb, Organization of Chinese-Americans and Asian American Heritage Foundation. In 2003, he co-founded For the Kid in All of Us, an all-volunteer non-profit that collects toys and school supplies for Georgia’s underprivileged children.
