Howard will be an important voice for equality on the ANC!
Howard Bauleke has served as commissioner for ANC SMD 1C01 since January 2022, where he’s a member of the ABC and Public Safety Committee and the Planning, Zoning and Transportation Committee. A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Kansas, he served as a congressional staffer for 27 years, including as legislative staff and chief of staff for Reps. Jim Slattery [D-KS], Karen McCarthy [D-MO], Dennis Moore [D-KS], as a policy staffer for Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt [MO] and as counsel for Commerce Committee ranking Democrat John Dingell [MI]. During that time he worked in many policy areas, including appropriations, energy, telecommunications, pensions, taxation and financial services. A native Kansan, he came to DC for law school in 1981 and purchased his home in 1C01 in 1990, where he’s a longtime member of his condominium board. As someone mostly retired from politics on a larger stage, he’s considered the ANC to be a very parochial activity: in addition to pedestrian/traffic safety, focusing on things like 311 requests, discouraging street crime, and working with the BID on bike racks and their pedestrian zone proposal. Much of this job involves things like being a resource for constituents on DC government info, responding to zoning variance requests, and mediating liquor licensee settlement agreements with the neighborhood. But he also wants to continue speaking out against the Harris Rider and in support of DC’s current gun safety laws [which will be threatened by a Republican Congress] and for reproductive justice and gay equality.
