Biography

Brian L. Alston is a native of Rembert, South Carolina and lives by the mission of his fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., “Culture for Service. Service for Humanity.” He was elected to the Sumter School District board in 2018. As the youngest ever elected in the history of Sumter School District, he serves on its Finance and Transportation Ad – Hoc Committees; and Policy Chairman. He is a 2006 Honor Graduate of Columbia High School. He is a 2011 Cum Laude graduate of Morehouse College Department of Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice. Mr. Alston had the opportunity to travel to Central America and the Panama Canal with the Honorable Archbishop Desmond Tutu to study issues concerning race, ethnicity, human rights and sustainable development within the Afro-Latin Diaspora.

On June 10, 2014, Mr. Alston won the Sumter County portion of the SC State House District 50 in the Democratic Primary during his bid for the SC State House of Representatives, becoming the first and youngest candidate at 25 to do so against the longest serving member of the SC House at the time with a 532-vote margin. Brian served as a Legislative Aide for the 120th SC General Assembly in the Office of State Senators Marlon Kimpson and Assistant Minority Leader John W. Matthews. He also served as a member of the inaugural class of Jim Clyburn Political Fellows.

Mr. Alston’s tenure at South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, as a Workforce and Program Strategist in the Division of Workforce and Economic Development included being tasked to the Governor’s State Workforce Development Board. In that role, he managed several statewide projects. His last project included a National Apprenticeship model being spearheaded by South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce in partnership with South Carolina Technical College System and local school districts. He is currently employed with South Carolina Department of Administration, Office of Economic Opportunity, spearheading collaborative partnerships and community – based special initiatives.

In addition, Brian is a member of High Hills African Methodist Episcopal Church, an active volunteer at Rembert – Rafting Creek Community Center, member of Morehouse College National Alumni Association, NAACP, Kiwanis Club of Sumter, and Shaw-Sumter Community Council. In February 2021, he was most appointed as South Carolina Caucus of Black School Board Members, Midlands Regional Director. Lastly, he is completing an apprenticeship at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Inc.
