Candida Affa

Allentown City Council, At-Large

Candida will continue to be a critical LGBTQ voice on the Allentown City Council

Biography

For three and a half decades, Candida Affa owned and operated one of Allentown, Pennsylvania’s gay bars. As a leader in the local LGBT community, she co-founded a local HIV/AIDS charity, Fighting AIDS Continuously Together (FACT Lehigh Valley) and raised more than $2M to support individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

An Allentown resident for 45 years, Candida served on Allentown’s Parking Authority prior to her election to City Council in 2015. Early in her first term, Candida introduced legislation to ban the harmful and unscientific practice of ‘conversion therapy’ within City limits – an ordinance which has become a model for other cities in Pennsylvania. She also co-sponsored an ordinance which renamed an Allentown street in honor of civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, and has been a leader in addressing nuisance and noise issues in the city.
