Cori will be the first openly LGBTQ Mayor of Carlsbad
Cori Schumacher is a City Councilwoman in Carlsbad, California, a three-time world surfing champion, non-profit founder and CEO, and published author. Cori has 20 years experience as an international human rights advocate, with special interest in environmental justice. Before being elected to office, among other efforts, Schumacher launched a viral campaign against sexism in surf marketing and she co-founded The Inspire Initiative, a 501(c)3 organization that uses surfing to empower women and girls to be sustainable and effective civic leaders, and the Institute for Women Surfers, an educational initiative in the public humanities. She has been published in The Guardian, The Surfers Journal, Gender Across Borders, and the Critical Surf Studies Reader (Duke University Press, 2017). Cori has been a regular speaker at global action sports conferences on critical topics such as surfing and sustainable development; gender and sport; LGBTQ and sport; and ethical and transparent sourcing in supply-chains.
In addition, Cori’s work has been the subject of a number of documentaries, interviews, and projects since 2013, including Flux: Redefining Women’s Surfing (2014), Out in the Line-up, the first documentary on the taboo of homosexuality in surfing (2014), and Waves of Disruption: The Cori Schumacher Story (2015).
