Craig will be the first openly LGBTQ person elected to any county-wide office in Stark County!


Craig Covey began organizing the LGBT+ community in the early 1980’s with the co-founding of Columbus’ Stonewall Union. He co-founded the annual Gay Pride Parades in that city beginning in 1982 which today draw upwards of a half million people annually. He was the youngest person ever elected to the Columbus Ohio ACLU Board in the 80’s, the first openly Gay elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980.

HE led Michigan’s statewide Gay rights organization Michigan Organization in the late 80’s and then founded and directed the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project for 22 years, creating HIV prevention campaigns and education for a statewide and beyond audiences. He founded the LGBT pride marches in Detroit and Michigan and then became the first openly Gay person elected mayor in Michigan after serving on Ferndale’s City Council for eight years. He was also elected Oakland County Commissioner in 2012.

He spent his life advocating for women’s rights, peace, justice, and environmental protections in addition to providing LGBT leadership across the Great Lakes region before returning home to Canton Ohio in 2017. Over the past three decades he has raised several millions of dollars for organizations providing support for young people, community foundations, and LGBT group
