She will be only the second openly LGBTQ Attorney General in the United States.
Dana Nessel graduated from University of Michigan and Wayne State University Law School. She spent over ten years working as an Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor, tackling violent crime from child abuse and sexual assault to homicide.
In private practice, Dana spearheaded DeBoer vs. Snyder, helping pave the way for marriage equality in 2015. She also founded the Fair Michigan Justice Project with the Wayne County, Michigan Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute LGBTQ hate crimes.
Dana received the “Champion of Justice” award from the Michigan State Bar Association, “Woman of the Year” from Michigan Lawyers Weekly and the “Treasure of Detroit” award from Wayne State University Law School for her courageous work in civil rights.
Dana, and her wife, Alanna, live in southeast Michigan with their twin sons, Alex and Zach and the their two cats, Gracie and Warfield.
Importance of Candidacy:
- Dana will be the first openly LGBTQ Attorney General in Michigan.
- She will be only the second openly LGBTQ Attorney General in the United States.
