Randy Downs

DC Councilmember, Ward 2

Will be the only openly LGBTQ member of the DC Council and the first openly LGBTQ DC Ward 2 Councilmember in history!

Biography

Randy Downs is running to represent Ward 2 on the DC Council. He aims to provide ethical, bold, authentic leadership for Ward 2.

Randy believes more must be done to make Ward 2 equitable and accessible for all, while protecting what works in our communities.

As the first person in his family to graduate college, Randy yearned to make things better for families like his. He fought to raise the minimum wage and worked to protect water from contamination in his home state of Missouri.

However, it wasn’t until Randy visited DC for the first time on a trip with the Sierra Club that he felt truly welcomed for who he is. Randy moved to DC for a job at the Sierra Club. He joined the Stonewall LGBTQ sports league and volunteered at local organizations like Whitman Walker Health, DC Center for the LGBT Community, and Casa Ruby.

For the past four years, Randy has served as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. He has advocated for affordable housing and protections for DC’s large LGBTQ community. He also worked to make desperately needed improvements to the city’s transportation infrastructure and beloved parks.

Randy is proud to have championed change in Ward 2 but knows more must be done to improve Ward 2 and DC for everyone. He is excited to serve as the first openly LGBTQ Ward 2 Councilmember in history and provide deeply needed LGBTQ representation on the DC Council. He urges everyone to join his community-driven, people-powered campaign at www.randyforward2.com.
