San Francisco Board of Supervisors, District 4


Joel will be the first out LGBTQ+ person to represent District 4 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors!


Joel Engardio and his husband Lionel Hsu became westside homeowners near Stern Grove a decade ago. Joel has lived in San Francisco since 1998.

As a journalist for over 20 years, Joel investigated government inefficiencies and gave residents a voice. Joel has won multiple awards for his work in outlets like the San Francisco Examiner, USA Today and PBS.

Joel is the host of the popular SF Politics 101 presentation and webinar.

Joel also worked for the national ACLU to establish and protect Constitutional rights for LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, and voters.

Joel’s contributions in journalism and at the ACLU were recognized by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy with a scholarship to the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Joel has Master’s in Public Administration from the Kennedy School and B.A. in journalism from Michigan State University.

Joel was raised in the General Motors factory town of Saginaw, Michigan by his single mom and grandmother. Joel’s mom cleaned houses for a living.

Joel leads Stop Crime SF, a grassroots group of thousands of San Franciscans working to create a safe city for all. Joel also helped lead this year’s historic school board recall.

Joel is a board member of two of San Francisco’s largest political clubs: the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club and the United Democratic Club.

Joel also served as a member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, which governs the local Democratic Party.
