Gabriela De Jesús will be the first openly LGBTQ woman of color elected to the Florida Legislature
Gabriela De Jesús is a candidate for Florida House District 116.
She was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Dominican Republic. Gabriela began her public service journey in 2010 in New York City where she volunteered with the Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations in their efforts to increase literacy rates in rural areas of the island. In 2012, Gabriela joined Miami-Dade County’s Office of Communications as an Advertising Specialist. She is the founder and President of the Puerto Rican Student Association (PRSA) at FIU, an organization founded to aid and support students displaced by the recent hurricanes in Puerto Rico. In 2019, Gabriela and PRSA secured in-state tuition at FIU until 2022 for over 200 Puerto Rican students displaced by Hurricane Maria. Gabriela is also a board member of La Mesa Boricua of Florida, the Puerto Rican Leadership Council of South Florida, and the Puerto Rican Alliance of Florida.
Gabriela has a Bachelor’s of Science in Hospitality Management and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Health & Human Concerns from FIU and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Administration. She is also the recipient of two Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships awarded by the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center at FIU. Upon graduation from her Master’s she will receive a Certificate in Comparative and International Public Administration and a Certificate in Latin American Studies.
