Gabriela was the first out LGBTQ+ woman elected to the Detroit City Council!
Biography
Gabriela Santiago-Romero is an immigrant from Mexico, a proud Southwest Detroit native, and a dedicated social worker and community organizer. Before being elected to public office, Gabriela worked with several Detroit-based nonprofits and local government, focusing on empowering working-class communities. Most recently, she served as the Policy and Research Director at We The People Michigan, leading efforts to advance progressive, people-centered policy at both the state and local levels.
In 2021, Gabriela made history by becoming the first out queer woman to serve on Detroit City Council. During her time in office, she has delivered tangible results for the LGBTQ+ community. She honored local trans leaders with the Spirit of Detroit Award on Trans Day of Visibility, marched in Motor City Pride, and passed resolutions recognizing Pride Month. She also championed resolutions supporting bills to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and expand protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Gabriela is running for re-election because she believes every Detroiter – regardless of income, race, gender, sexuality, immigration status, or ability – deserves access to safe, affordable housing and reliable city services. Her vision for Detroit is rooted in equity, dignity, and the belief that our government should work for all of us.
