Biography

Gray Ellis, 47, is a successful businessman and attorney. He is transgendered and brings a new perspective to today’s political arena. Gray is running for the North Carolina Senate because he recognizes the critical need for new leadership on the issues facing our district and our state.

In 2008, Gray founded Ellis Family Law, a successful family law practice in Durham. As an entrepreneur and professional advocate, Gray has been rewarded for his hard work and devotion to ethics. Gray has been honored with numerous professional awards, including the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in N.C.

Gray’s law practice works to help families in crisis of all races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. As a young adult, Gray worked with juveniles who had been adjudicated delinquent or undisciplined and saw the impact that income disparity, limited educational opportunities and a lack of mental health treatment could have on a family. Additionally, Gray grew up with a close relative who suffers from significant mental health concerns.

Gray has a long-term partner and children, three of whom attended Durham Public Schools. Gray openly transitioned at the age of 40 while working to build his law practice and care for his family. He is an advocate for anti-discrimination legislation and believes in equal opportunity for all regardless of race, gender, religion or economic status.
