Monroe County Board of Commissioners, District 3

Heather has been a key LGBTQ voice in South Florida

Biography

Commissioner Carruthers’ record reflects her commitment to balance, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. Among the efforts she has supported are improving clarity in the budget process, enabling workforce housing, and addressing issues related to sea-level rise and climate change. She has represented Monroe County in Tallahassee and in Washington, D.C., and has been instrumental in advocacy efforts in favor of home rule on behalf of the Florida Association of Counties and the National Association of Counties.

Carruthers is seeking re-election to offer proven leadership, knowledge, and experience for the next four years as the County faces challenges – some old, some new – that will require a deep understanding of our community and our government at all levels. As a former owner of Pearl’s Key West guesthouse and a highly engaged community activist, she understands the dynamics of the community and how government operates.

Heather Carruthers has lived in Key West for over 20 years. She and her partner, Coleen, are grateful to be raising their two young children in paradise. Heather is running to ensure that they, too, can raise their children in the fabulous Florida Keys.
