Like so many kids growing up in Houston, Nick Hellyar was motivated to be an aerospace engineer and work for NASA.

But some big events changed Nick Hellyar’s trajectory to something completely different.

First, the HIV/AIDS crisis was a devastating blow to Houston’s LGBTQIA+ community. Coming out in the 1990’s, Nick was caught in the middle of the HIV/AIDS crisis and saw the devastation that occurred in his community. As young gay man, it was a life-changing period of time bringing him to a realization that working to help others would be a priority in his life.

Second, the 2000 Presidential election race inspired him to get involved in public service more directly. After graduating from the University of Houston, Nick began working on local political campaigns eventually ending up as City Council staffer for Councilmember James Rodriguez. It was there he found mentorship and inspiration from brilliant Houstonians like Sue Lovell and Mayor Annise Parker.

It was from these experiences where Nick Hellyar realized that public service was going to be an important and meaningful part of his everyday life.
Indeed, for Nick, public service meant being able to deliver for constituents in some way, every single day.

It meant working together on creative solutions to big problems while making certain that the everyday needs of our neighborhoods were being met.

Nick’s passion for service and to just “get things done” still drives him to serve the City of Houston in several ways. From serving on the Museum Park Super Neighborhood and Bike Houston boards to working with the Municipal Utility District and the Heritage Society, Nick has devoted his time to building a better, stronger Houston.

That is why Nick Hellyar is running for Houston City Council.

Today, as both a homeowner and small business owner, Nick Hellyar has a unique perspective on the challenges that Houstonians face every day. Whether its traffic, public safety or other “streetlight and pothole” issues that each neighborhoods faces, Nick Hellyar knows that making government work is about delivering on basic needs of our citizens.
