Denise Hernández

Travis County Court at Law, 6

Denise will be the first out gay woman elected to a county court in Travis County!

Denise is a lawyer and community advocate in Austin, Texas, running to be the first openly gay Latina to serve County Court at Law #6. Both Denise’s parents grew up as migrant farmworkers and instilled the importance of social justice in her. As the daughter of an immigrant, growing up in a low-income community, she witnessed first-hand the lack of equity and cultural competence in the judicial system. Denise’s lived experience inspired her to become the first person in her family to go to college. She later became the first lawyer in her family. Fully committed to giving back to the community, Denise dedicated her legal career to social justice and public service. She started her career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal services to low-income communities. She now serves as the Deputy Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Travis County Attorney’s Office, helping to transform the criminal justice system. In addition to her professional career, Denise is a public servant at heart. She’s dedicated over 15 years to mentoring students from marginalized communities. Denise also developed a speaker series to connect low-income students to college counseling, and she launched a womxn empowerment festival to help raise funds for local nonprofits. Denise has years of experience in criminal justice, community building, and creating equitable community initiatives. She is now running to bring equity, inclusion, and cultural competency to our judicial system.
