Jake will be the first out LGBTQ person elected to Jersey City Council!
Jake Hudnut was sworn in as Jersey City’s chief municipal prosecutor in July 2018. He took office promising to create a progressive, problem-solving local prosecutor’s office focused on increasing quality of life and giving a fair shake to every person who stands before the city’s courts. In his first year, he issued a first-in-the-state policy decriminalizing marijuana possession and partnered with various local organizations to offer in-court counseling referrals for victims of domestic violence.
Jake also chairs the city’s Quality of Life Taskforce, which has investigated and prosecuted absentee landlords, local polluters, negligent businesses, and other public nuisances. He also oversaw the city’s enforcement of state and local executive orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the effort to flatten the curve and save lives. A former public defender, Jake is committed to criminal justice reform. He was among the leaders who founded the Jersey City Police Department’s Quality of Life Unit, a progressive and community-driven police unit dedicated to solving residents’ problems, eliminating neighborhood nuisances, and leading with education before enforcement.
Jake moved to Jersey City in 2005. In 2011, he opened his own solo law practice on the Pedestrian Plaza at the age of 28. He served as a neighborhood association president in 2018, standing for responsible development. He lives in Harsimus Cove with his fiancé Tyler, a designer featured on Bravo’s Project Runway.
