Biography

Janice Li is running for BART Board re-election this November 2022. As a first-time candidate, Janice won this seat by over a 12-point margin and became the first Asian American woman to ever serve on the BART Board. In her four years on the BART Board, Janice has helped guide California’s largest rail transit system through the pandemic that returned service back to nearly 100% pre-pandemic service while avoiding layoffs of our essential workers. She also led successful initiatives to develop BART’s first-ever low-income fare program to make public transit more affordable, reopen bathrooms, build housing on BART land, and create an ambassador and social worker program to increase staff presence at BART and find real, compassionate solutions to address the safety and quality of life issues at stations. Until 2021, Janice worked at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, where she led countless campaigns to make San Francisco streets more walkable, bikeable and transit-first. Now she directs the Coalition for Community Safety and Justice, a coalition founded by four long-standing AAPI-serving community organizations to address violence. Janice was born in Hong Kong, raised in Buffalo, NY, and lives in San Francisco with her partner.
