Jimmy Flannigan

Austin City Council, District 6

Jimmy is the first openly gay man to serve on the Austin City Council

Council Member Jimmy Flannigan was elected to serve the people of Austin City Council District 6 in 2016. With a background in LGBTQ activism and small business leadership, his approach to issues balances civil and worker liberty with fiscal responsibility.

Since taking office, Flannigan has stepped into leadership roles in municipal judicial appointments, economic development, traffic solutions, affordable housing, pedestrian safety, fiscal sustainability, public safety, regional collaboration, and in raising the level of civic engagement in Northwest Austin.
As Council Member, he established the City of Austin’s LGBTQ Quality of Life Advisory Commission, helped launch the city’s first LGBTQ employee group, SEEN, the Stonewall Equality Employee Network, and banned the funding of conversion therapy in the city.

Currently, Flannigan serves on a number of boards with a regional focus, including on the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) board, the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Executive Committee, as Chair of the Economic Development District Board, and as Chair of the Community Advancement Network. He also serves as Chair of the City’s Judicial Committee and Vice Chair of the Mobility Committee, among other appointments.

Prior to his work on council, CM Flannigan served as president of the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and as regional chair of the National LGBT Chamber and co-founded the Northwest Austin Coalition.
