John is the first and only openly gay man to serve in the Idaho Legislature
John McCrostie has lived in Garden City for decades. He worked for a Fortune 500 hi-tech company providing customer service and technical support, for mid-size real estate companies, and in Idaho public schools teaching band, choir, and guitar to 5th-12th grade students.
John developed his educational and union leadership as an executive board member of the Boise Education Association, an 8-year state delegate to the Idaho Education Association’s Delegate Assembly, and a 5-year national representative to the National Education Association’s Representative Assembly. The NEA honored John twice as a Top Political Activist in 2013 and 2018.
John’s history of promoting diversity includes serving as a Diversity Champion, Safe Space member, and GLSEN member in his work at Hewlett-Packard; advocating in the NEA’s LGBTQ and Fine Arts Caucuses; and as the Concordia Law School student representative to and current member of the Diversity Section of the Idaho State Bar.
John has served Garden City and west and northwest Boise as an Idaho State Representative for six years. He has worked in House Education, State Affairs, Judiciary, and Local Government Standing Committees and numerous interim committees.
