John is the first and only openly gay man to serve in the Idaho Legislature
Since 2014, John McCrostie has served as State Representative for Idaho’s District 16, covering Garden City and west and northwest Boise. John has taught music for 15 years to 5th through 12th grade students in Boise, Gooding and his hometown of Mountain Home. John and his husband Dave call Garden City their home.
John’s political involvement sprouted in Idaho’s successful “Vote No on Props 1, 2 and 3” education referendum campaign. John developed his educational and union leadership through elected positions in the Boise Education Association, Idaho Education Association, and the National Education Association. In 2013, the NEA honored John as a Top Political Activist.
John’s promoted diversity at Hewlett-Packard as Diversity Champion and on the Safe Space and GLSEN teams; in the IEA with the NEA’s GLBT Caucus; and in the Diversity Section of the Idaho State Bar. In 2014, Fund for Idaho honored John with the Community Catalyst Award.
Through his legislative tenure, John sponsored bills to ban conversion therapy, to repeal Idaho’s same sex marriage ban, and to modernize Idaho’s non discrimination and hate crimes statutes by including “sexual orientation and gender identity.” In 2015, the Imperial Court System presented John with the Jose Julio Sarria Civil Rights Award, and in 2018, the Idaho Counseling Association presented John with their Equality Award. John is the first openly gay man and first openly gay person of color to serve in the Idaho Legislature.
