Biography

Judge Levander “Van” Smith, Jr.  was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court Judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County, effective February 8, 2019. He currently is assigned to the County Department of Domestic Violence Court. Previously, he was assigned to the First Municipal District in the Richard J. Daley Center, hearing traffic court cases.

Prior to appointment as a judge, Levander spent 25+ years as a practicing attorney, primarily in the public sector. He served as an attorney with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) for the majority of that time. Levander served as Regional Counsel, Supervisory Regional Counsel and as Litigation Attorney Supervisor where he worked to protect and ensure the safety and well being of the children and families of Illinois.

Levander received my J.D., University of Kansas School of Law, 1991 and my B.S.B.A., Washington University, St. Louis, MO.
