Kate is the first and only openly LGBTQ governor in the U.S.
Governor Kate Brown is the country’s first and only LGBTQ governor. For more than 25 years, Governor Kate Brown has been fighting for jobs and kids, working to make Oregon a state where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. She has a long and established record of fighting for working families, better education, a cleaner environment, and making our government more transparent and efficient than ever.
Over three years in the Governor’s office, Kate Brown has gotten real results for Oregon families. Kate worked successfully to raise the state’s minimum wage, ban conversion therapy, guarantee paid sick leave, increase education funding, and put Oregon at the forefront of the clean energy movement with legislation that ends Oregon’s use of coal power.
Most recently she negotiated a historic 10-year, $5.3 billion transportation package to upgrade the state’s roads and bridges, defended and expanded the health care of Oregonians, signed the country’s most progressive reproductive health policy, eased the process for transgender people to update their official documents, and passed automatic voter registration through the DMV.
Prior to her career in elected office, Governor Brown worked as a child advocate and a juvenile and family law attorney. She taught at Portland State University, worked with the Juvenile Rights Project and co-founded the Oregon Women’s Health & Wellness Alliance.
Governor Brown lives in Portland with her husband Dan.
