Kathy will be a voice for the LGBTQ community in Washington
Kathy is an award-winning, retired newspaper editor and reporter whose career included posts in Colorado, Arizona, California and Oregon. A 26-year resident of SW Washington, Kathy served for 8 years on the Vancouver Public Schools Board of Directors helping to oversee the district’s $303 million budget, 37 schools and programs, 24,000 students, 3,400 employees and four labor groups. Vancouver Public Schools are recognized nationally for innovative programs and excellence in education. The Board’s exceptional record in sound governance has been recognized at the state level with consecutive Board of the Year recognition and merit awards.
Kathy has served as a longtime mentor and tutor to young people in her community as a Lunch Buddy, reading tutor and as a high school mentor to young women in high school and middle school. She has served in varied leadership roles through Parent Teacher Associations at multiple schools and has been recognized for outstanding service to her community numerous times. Kathy and her family have raised three dogs for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), a nonprofit organization that provides assistance dogs free of charge to recipients.
Gillespie was born in Ohio and raised in Arizona. She attended Colorado State University on a swimming scholarship and graduated in 1985 with a degree in political science. Kathy and her wife Debbie have been married for 27 years and have two children in college.
