Biography

Sandra Kurt is honored to serve Summit County residents as Clerk of Courts and is running to bring the conveniences and efficiencies of technology and outstanding customer service to the Clerk of the Akron Municipal Court. Sandra enhanced her fourteen years of public service in elected office with her engineering experience from private industry to make local government work effectively for residents and customers. Sandra has served as Clerk of Courts since January 2016. Under her leadership, the Legal Office has instituted electronic filing and modernized Accounting for the Court of Common Pleas and Ninth District Court of Appeals. These innovations made it possible for customers to file from their office or their home while reducing the costs of operating the Clerk’s office. Sandra added weekend and evening hours to the Title Division to make it easier for residents to process their auto and boat titles and to get their Passports. Sandra also added the option to purchase County dog licenses at select Title offices. Sandra’s concern about the opiate crisis in Summit County motivated her to provide free drug disposal bags at all Clerk of Courts locations. Prior to becoming Clerk of Courts, Sandra served as an At-Large Councilwoman on Summit County Council, a position she held for five years. She was twice elected unanimously by her colleagues to serve as Vice-President of the Council. Sandra chaired the Public Works committee and served as Vice-Chair of the Finance committee for her entire tenure on the County Council. Prior to County Council, Sandra served on Akron City Council as the Ward 8 Councilperson. Prior to entering politics, Sandra had a full and rewarding career wielding her Industrial Engineering expertise at a global manufacturing company headquartered in Akron. Sandra’s private sector experience ranged from project management to process improvement, developing and managing the corporate capital plan, and helping develop an electronic solution for planning and executing plant projects along with managing the associated capital expenditures. Sandra is a graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. In June of 2015, Sandra was awarded a certificate of completion for the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program, Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Executive Education. Sandra volunteers her time serving local organizations to better our community. Sandra is a member of the Advisory Council for the Harry Donovan Jr. Valor Home of Summit County. Valor Home is a transitional housing program for homeless veterans. Sandra also serves on the board of the Friends of Metro Parks, a non-profit organization that supports and encourages public enjoyment of Summit Metro Parks through membership, outreach, and advocacy. Sandra enjoyed serving on the Akron Pride Festival committee for the inaugural three years of the festival. Sandra is a member of the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area, and a lifetime member of the NAACP. Sandra can often be found walking Kennebec, her Shih Tzu rescue, in Summit County’s gorgeous Metro Parks.
