LaWana Slack-Mayfield

Charlotte City Council, At-Large

LaWana will once again serve as the first out LGBTQ member on the Charlotte City Council!

In the early 1990s, LaWana Mayfield trained under June Rostan at Southern Empowerment Project where she learned Grassroots Community Organizing, and under Dr. Jamie Washington and Kathy Obear at the Social Justice Training Institute where she trained on Full and Equal Justice for All. In the late 2000s, LaWana worked for Si Kahn at Grassroots Leadership where she was the Meck County Project Justice Coordinator with a focus on ending For-Profit Prisons and Immigration Reform.

These experiences shaped her foundation and are the reason why she is passionate about community involvement, access to resources, ending racial bias, homophobia, and the importance of equity. She is an ACTIVIST.

LaWana ran for office and won in 2011 in large part because the community took a chance and supported her vision for the next eight years. As the former District 3 Representative, LaWana led or created the opening of Dunkin Donuts & Pinky’s on Freedom Dr. The creation of the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, The Charlotte Premium Outlets, The Targeted Re-Hab Program, The Charlotte Douglas International Airport Job Fair, The First Youth Job Fair just to name few in the District which also benefited the community as a whole.

LaWana is asking for your support as she takes her passion for stable diverse price point housing, smart access to upward mobility, strong economic development knowledge along with a desire to end racial & gender bias, to create a city that is truly “welcoming to ALL.”
