Lisa will continue to be an important voice for equality in Maryland!
Lisa Belcastro started her career 10 years ago as a special education teacher in a Maryland public school. During her first day on the job, she learned her teaching space was going to be in a hallway and the resources for her classroom were going to be minimal. Knowing that students deserve better, Lisa started on a path of advocacy and a search for meaningful solutions.
In addition to maintaining her position as an educator, Lisa now serves in the Maryland House of Delegates. In her position as a delegate, Lisa has worked collaboratively with state and local leaders on initiatives that strengthen our educational infrastructure and system.
Believing deeply that strong communities make strong schools, Lisa prides herself on being a community-focused advocate who fights for priorities that matter to the individuals and families she represents — including public education; access to recreational opportunities; our local economy; affordable health care; a cleaner environment and quality of life for our aging population.
Knowing government works better when it is connected to the communities it serves, Lisa’s community-focused representation centers on providing responsive constituent services, being accessible to those she represents and building strong partnerships with community groups.
Lisa’s experiences in the classroom have earned her a reputation of being a creative problem solver. While lacking adequate resources for an inclusive classroom environment, Lisa found inexpensive ways to build customized equipment for her students with disabilities. Her creations eventually caught the eye of the Sport Diplomacy Division at the U.S. Department of State. In collaboration with the department, Lisa’s work has been shared across the globe in an effort to help promote inclusive opportunities in sports for those with disabilities. Lisa’s creative approach to problem solving has proven to be an asset in her role on the Health and Government Operations Committee and the Oversight Committee for Quality Care in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities.
Lisa and her wife, Stef, are proud District 11 residents who live in Sudbrook Park with their two dogs, Iggie and Jack.
