Rich will be the first openly LGBTQ Governor of Maryland
Senator Rich Madaleno is one of the most influential leaders in the Maryland General Assembly. In 2002 he was the first openly gay candidate elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. In 2006 he became the first openly gay candidate elected to the Maryland State Senate. Since being elected to office, Rich has succeeded in passing vital legislation on economic, education, environmental and transportation issues. He is recognized as the “go-to expert” on budget issues. He is a vocal critic of Governor Hogan’s continued attempts to finance tax cuts by cutting needed programs. In 2012, Rich led the fight to pass marriage equality in Maryland, becoming the first state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage by ballot. In 2016, he introduced and passed first-in-the-nation legislation that guaranteed state funding for Planned Parenthood if the Federal government cut off funds. Since his July 2017 kickoff, Rich has traveled across the state talking directly to voters and hearing their concerns. Rich has a simple message: Maryland needs a strong leader who will once again make sure the state leads the country in advanced infrastructure; quality education; and a vision that values everyone—not just the wealthy and well-connected. Rich grew up in Silver Spring. He earned bachelors’ and masters’ degrees from Syracuse University. He and his husband, Mark, live in Kensington, Maryland with their two children.
