Matt Hughes

North Carolina House of Representatives, District 50

Matt will be the first out LGBTQ member of the legislature from Orange County!

Matt Hughes (he/him) has been involved in public service, Democratic politics, and progressive causes for over a decade. He currently works for Blueprint North Carolina, a non-profit network of 50+ organizations working together to provide training and resource sharing for civic engagement and fostering a healthy democracy.

Matt has served as the Second Vice Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party since 2017 and as a member of the Democratic National Committee since 2020. During the 2020 presidential campaign President Joe Biden’s campaign named him chair of LGBTQ+ outreach and nationally to the LGBTQ+ Steering Committee. Matt’s effective use of grassroots politics to promote change has been observed and praised, including by the Independent Weekly: “Party leaders have credited [Matt] Hughes with increasing voter turnout in past elections.”

In 2018, Matt was appointed to a vacancy on the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners and in 2019 was elected to a full four-year term. He is the first openly LGBTQ+ elected official in the town’s 260+ year history. Believing that people should be active members of their community, Matt serves on several non-profit and local government advisory boards and serves as one of Governor Roy Cooper’s appointees on the North Carolina Human Relations Commission.

Matt is a first generation college graduate having graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BA in Political Science (’12) and a Masters of Public Administration (’18).
