Matthew will be the second openly gay man ever elected to the Georgia State Legislature
Matthew Wilson, a trial lawyer and former middle-school teacher, is running to flip Georgia’s State House District 80. Matthew was raised in a working-class family. His dad, a former police officer, was physically disabled when Matthew and his sister were just in kindergarten. His mom, a retired respiratory therapist, worked night shifts to provide for their family. Because of this experience, Matthew understands the importance of having access to quality healthcare and the role the state can play to support Georgia families through their most vulnerable times.
From an early age, he was raised to value public service. After college, Matthew taught sixth-grade math, science, and social studies at a Title I school and saw firsthand the daunting challenges our educators face every day trying to close the achievement gap. Following his time in the classroom, Matthew advocated for sound policy under the Gold Dome in Atlanta. He now runs a law office in Brookhaven where he is recognized as one of Georgia’s top young trial lawyers.
Matthew earned his law degree from the University of Georgia and has used his legal and legislative training to help defeat bills that would harm Georgia consumers and LGBTQ Georgians. He’s running now to continue to fight for all HD80 residents by focusing on the priorities that will move us forward as a community–education, healthcare, and transit.
