Matthew will be an important voice for equality on the Metro Parks Tacoma Commission!
Matt Mauer is a dedicated father who loves visiting his neighborhood parks with his two-year-old son and his husband. He is ready to work hard to make sure that his son and every other family has safe and convenient access to Tacoma’s beautiful parks. Matt has the experience to work collaboratively and effectively on the Metro Parks board. Graduating with a Masters of Public Administration from Seattle University, Matt has experience in government, the military, non-profits, and the private sector. His professional experience is rooted in service and management. Matt began his career in the Coast Guard, which included two deployments and management of teams both abroad and in the United States. After nearly a decade of service in the Coast Guard Reserves, Matt transitioned to working in the office of U.S. Senator Patty Murray where he helped veterans as her King County Veterans Affairs Director. Matt then spent two years in the private sector, working as the Government and Community Relations Associate for Vulcan Inc. where he co-managed their corporate sponsorship budget of $500,000. He was then compelled to return to public service and started in 2019 as the Director of External affairs for Lt. Governor Cyrus Habib until the Lt. Governor stepped down from office. He now works as the Government Affairs Manager for the Port of Tacoma and has served on several boards, including the Child Care Resources board, South Lake Union Community Council and South Lake Union Chamber of Commerce. Matt’s diverse work experience has helped him become a strong collaborator and supporter of good government. As a father, Matt can also bring a fresh perspective to the Metro Parks board. Matt believes that parks can have such a positive impact for children, and he will use this lens for his decision making during his term.
