Mauro will be the first out LGBTQ Latino and first out HIV-positive person elected in Albuquerque!


Mauro Montoya, Esq., is co-owner of ABQSEA Partners, LLC& Barbary Lane, LLC, both real estate management companies, and Madness Motors, a classic vehicle restoration shop. He is a recovering attorney, having started the legal program for People with AIDS at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C. in 1986, then founded the HIV Legal Clinic at the D.C. School of Law. He is retired, is a professional volunteer, and is Albuquerque LGBTQ Ambassador. He is LGBTQ Liaison for the Albuquerque Trolley Company. He is past President of the Albuquerque LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce (now New Mexico Out Business Alliance). He sits on several non-profit boards including Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and the Wheels Museum. He became a minister in the Universal Life Church in July, 2013 to marry same-sex couples who had always been denied the right to marry. Reverend Montoya has officiated over 100 weddings in NM, CA, TX and soon in Washington state. He is writing a book about his AIDS attorney days in the 1980s & 1990s. In 1994, he was the keynote speaker for the federal government’s World AIDS Day events in DC, and was introduced by President Bill Clinton. Reverend Montoya received a bachelor of arts degree in Government from New Mexico State University in 1981, and a J.D. from George Washington University Law Center in 1984. Reverend Montoya lives in Albuquerque with his adorable husband Andy, three rambunctious doggies, several classic cars & a whole lot of plants.
