Steven McCarty

Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, 2G04

Steven will be an important voice for equality on the ANC!

Service has been central to Steven’s story. He credits his ability to break the cycle of generational poverty, get an education, and achieve economic mobility through the vast community network that supported him growing up. That’s why he’s donated thousands of hours of his time since 2012 volunteering in his communities. With a special love for leadership development and education, Steven has dedicated his time to Kiwanis International, volunteering in high school, college, and now as an adult. In college, Steven served as Governor of the Michigan District of Circle K International and then as International Vice President for Circle K International (CKI) where he traveled the globe working with college students on igniting their passion for serving their homes, schools, and communities. Steven has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C. since 2018, serving on various committees, on its Board of Directors, and as President since June 2021. He is most proud of helping to launch their partnership with SMYAL which includes an annual $100,000 grant to provide free, affirming, mental healthcare services to LGTBQ youth in D.C. He was awarded the “Youth Champion Award” by SMYAL for his work supporting mental healthcare services for queer and trans youth in the District of Columbia.

Steven leads by example and is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Over the years, Steven has worked to support many philanthropic initiatives. He’s raised thousands of dollars for Experience Camps that provide children who’ve lost a parent a free week at camp to play, learn, and grieve with their peers. In 2019 after the murder of George Floyd, he partnered with his colleagues to start an organization called Abolish Racism that connected individuals concerned about racist policing in their communities with their elected representatives. His love for technology, people, and helping communities has driven his career from day one. Steven works at stac labs, a consulting firm specializing in supporting State Democratic Parties. He’s always excited to support community advocates with a desire to better the lives of those around them. When he’s not focused on advocating for fair and just policies, he’s advocating internally with leaders on how they can make their organizations more inclusive and equitable for his colleagues and those around them.
