Mitra was first elected in a special election on August 14, 2018 and re-elected for a full term in 2019, running on a platform of affordable housing and renter protections, building community wealth, community-first public safety, and climate action/sustainability.

In her first four years on the Council, Mitra has led the work to implement a comprehensive tenant protections strategy for Saint Paul, including rent stabilization; championed and supported the creation of thousands of new homes across the city at all income levels; worked closely with community to create an expanded public safety strategy with alternative 911 responders and key investments in people for greater stability; secured millions in public funding in neighborhoods experiencing commercial displacement; and fought for sustainable city policies and practices that address the climate crisis. In her first term as a Councilwoman, she has been recognized by both the City Pages and the Star Tribune for her clear and consistent leadership through multiple concurrent crises in state and city history. She is running for re-election to continue leading the fight for lasting progress in Saint Paul.
