Fabian Nelson

Mississippi House of Representatives

Spotlight Candidate

Fabian will be Mississippi's first out LGBTQ+ state lawmaker!

Biography

Fabian comes from a family of healthcare professionals that have broken down barriers for the African American community. Fabian’s grandmother was the first African American nurse to integrate the hospital in Yazoo City, and his father was one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

Growing up, Fabian learned the true meaning of serving his community as he watched his parents serve the community in different capacities. Fabian’s mother, a retired nurse, returned to the workforce as a property manager for low-income housing. Watching her work tirelessly to ensure that families in one of the most economically deprived areas of the state had affordable housing was his inspiration for a career in Real Estate. Seeing his father spearhead the fluoridation of the Yazoo City water system showed Fabian that positive change starts with one person.

Instilled with a hard work ethic by his parents, Fabian put himself through college and graduated from Jackson State University. After graduating from Jackson State, Fabian matriculated to American Public University, where he received his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship.

A foster parent
As a foster parent, Fabian sees our children’s daily struggle in the foster care system. With children attending four public schools and having only attended public schools, Fabian understands the need to fully fund education to ensure our children receive the best education possible. Fabian and his family are proud members of Jackson Revival Center Church. Fabian proudly serves as a member of the Gary Road Elementary, Gary Road Intermediate, Byram Middle School, and Terry High School Parent Teacher Organizations.  Fabian also serves on the MDCPS Parent Advisory Council, which works as a bridge between foster parents and the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services.

A small business leader

For the last 15 years, Fabian has proudly owned and operated Mississippi United Realty, a Real Estate Firm specializing in making homeownership possible for first-time homebuyers. Mississippi United Realty has become a pillar in the Byram community by offering families homebuyer and financial literacy seminars. Additionally, he has mentored several small business owners in South Jackson and Byram.

A public health advocate

Fabian recognizes that healthcare is a right and not a privilege. In 2006 Fabian’s mother became disabled after having a routine medical procedure. Due to her disability she lost her job and medical insurance. Fabian decided to postpone his college education and take care of his mother. After helping his mother navigate through our broken system for several years he decided to become a public health advocate to help others.

From 2013 through 2022 Mississippi has given up $14.5 billion dollars in federal funding that would help provide medical care for low-income residents. Medicaid expansion would make sure that all Mississippians have coverage, and prevent the closure of our hospitals.
