Ron will be one of only two out LGBTQ statewide elected officials in California!
As the son of immigrants and of a Holocaust survivor, Ron is L.A.’s first Citywide-elected LGBTQ+ official. As Controller, Ron has worked to ensure public dollars are spent transparently, efficiently, and equitably. As the Los Angeles Controller, Ron serves as the people’s elected watchdog, overseeing and rooting out waste of the city’s $11.2 billion dollar budget and supervising payroll for more than 40,000 city employees. Ron built a reputation as a leading voice for government reform as a small business owner and journalist for the L.A. Times and the L.A. Daily News. Through his work, Ron saw firsthand how transparency can spur government reform and change public policy.
Los Angeles voters first elected Ron in 2013, where despite being outspent 2-1, Ron beat an entrenched City Hall politician. Ron immediately got to work transforming the office with data and technology, to hold politicians accountable, and to get results from government. The son of immigrant parents, he and his husband, Rabbi Zachary Shapiro, are the proud parents of young twins – Maya and Eli.
