Biography

Melissa Shuen-Mallory is a non-binary queer femme running for New Haven Unified School Board in Trustee Area 2. Melissa lives in Union City, CA with their wife Michelle and a menagerie of animals. Melissa is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, the first openly LGBTQ commissioner in their city, they got the city to raise the rainbow flag during PRIDE month. Melissa also has a history of fighting for equity and justice, they have organized protests for Black Lives Matter, Families Belong Together (against inhumane immigration policies), and Red for Ed rallies (teacher strike in Oakland). They are a proud resident of Decoto where they have been serving as the Chair of the Union City Human Relations Commission since 2019 and also serve on the city’s subcommittee for Policing and Community Engagement. They are a former educator and proven leader. Melissa is running because they believe our students and teachers deserve better classroom resources. Melissa’s top priorities are putting our classrooms first, decriminalizing our students, ensuring our plan to re-open prioritizes safety of both students and teachers, and building a bridge between the City and the School District.
