Susan is the only LGBTQ member of the Lexington County Council
Biography
Susan grew up in the small town of Bagdad, Kentucky. She lived on a farm and learned the value of hard work and dedication at a young age. She enjoyed playing sports, helping her mother in her 3rd grade classroom and her father in the garden. She loved riding and showing Saddlebred horses. After graduating from Shelby County High School in 1982, Susan attended Georgetown College and Sullivan University f/n/a Sullivan Jr. College of Business.
Susan worked 27 years with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. She started working in the Div. of Planning with the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee and started learning about government process. Next Susan worked for Mayor Baesler’s Office of Economic Development where she worked with the Urban County Community Development Corporation, Industrial Revenue Bonds Committee, Lexington United, Urban Renewal and Community Development Agency and assisted with Lexington’s Enterprise Zone. She learned the importance of bringing businesses to Lexington. Then Susan was promoted to the Council Clerk’s Office and worked as the Deputy Council Clerk and the Council Clerk. She quickly learned the importance of this office and its value to Lexington and the Urban County Government. Susan saw areas within her office that could be improved upon and was given opportunities to implement ways for the office to be more productive. She knew the importance of educating the public about local government and implemented numerous projects to increase the level of transparency within the Urban County Government.
Susan has been involved in several community service projects involving homeless initiatives, educating youth and adults about local government through mock Council Meetings and speaking at schools and Senior Intern Programs. She hosted a World Equestrian Games information session for Kentucky local public officials in 2008. She served on the Local Outreach Committee and was a Deacon at Crestwood Christian Church. Susan was a member of the Bluegrass Municipal Clerks and Ky. Municipal Clerks Associations where she served in many capacities including President of both Associations. While serving as statewide President of the Ky. Municipal Clerks Association for two years, she formulated a request for proposal to manage the education, both new and continuing, for all Kentucky City Clerks. In April 2013, the Ky. Municipal Clerks Association named Susan as the 2013 Municipal Clerk of the Year.
In 2014, Susan decided to run for office to continue her public service in a new role. Susan was successful in defeating the incumbent for the Urban County Council 4th District seat and has served two terms. Susan was selected by her colleagues to Chair a standing Council Committee as a 1st term councilmember and continues to chair the General Government and Social Services Committee. In her campaign and still to this day, she strives to listen, respond and respect the needs of all communities in the district. With energy and enthusiasm, Susan brings her expertise and knowledge of city government to work for the citizens of Lexington.
Susan and Diana, her spouse, enjoy spending time with family and friends, especially their two granddaughters. They enjoy time at the lake with their dog, Baxter and playing golf.
She was appointed Fayette County Clerk on February 1, 2023 and is honored to be the first female to hold this office. She is a collaborative community leader with a proven record for working inclusively with everyone.
