Thomas would be the first out LGBTQ representative for District 49 and first person of Burmese heritage elected to a state legislature
Thomas Wong is an accomplished community activist and environmental advocate. He has a long record of delivering real results for the San Gabriel Valley and experience crafting policies to expand opportunity for all, including improving affordability and creating a sustainable environment.
Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, Thomas is the child of immigrants from Taiwan and Myanmar (Burma), who moved to our community to pursue the American dream. His parents were able to build a successful life for Thomas and his brothers, and their experiences inspired Thomas to help others succeed.
Thomas was elected to serve on the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District Board in 2012 and has served as the Board’s President since 2015. In that time, he spearheaded efforts to ensure a sustainable, affordable, and resilient water supply for the region. During the COVID-19 crisis, Thomas was instrumental in getting approval for half a million dollars in emergency assistance for local residents’ water bills and helped provide more than $8 million for local infrastructure and jobs.
Thomas works as an environmental policy advocate for Southern California Edison, one of the nation’s largest electric utilities and the largest employer in the 49th Assembly District. In that role, he brings together local businesses, non-profits, and community leaders to advance clean energy, climate, and environmental justice policies.
Thomas lives in Monterey Park with his partner, Travis.
