Biography

Troy Serad was raised by a disabled single mom of four boys and knows firsthand the challenges of poverty and housing insecurity—as well as the power of public services to change lives. Troy lives in Tacoma’s Eastside with his partner, Kevin. Off the clock, Troy is a Tacoma Transportation Commissioner and a member of the City’s Transit-Oriented Development Task Force. He finds joy in music, reading, writing about transportation projects, architecture, and hosting loved ones in the historic 1905 house that he rebuilt from the studs per his own plans. Troy is a “double-dog” with two degrees from the University of Washington (Tacoma and Seattle): a BA in urban studies and a Master’s degree in public administration. Troy enlisted in the Air Force Reserve in 2014 and served eight years. He joined a family tradition of military service, driven by a desire to serve and build. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 2022 following a deployment to Africa. That same drive fuels his current work as the lead engineer for Pierce County’s Safe Routes to School program, where he helps to improve infrastructure that allows kids and families to move safely through their communities.
