Vernetta will be a voice for social justice in the North Carolina State House


Vernetta was elected to the Durham City Council in 2017. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from North Carolina State University in 2004. In 2009, she received her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Vernetta currently works as a staff attorney at the Center for Death Penalty Litigation focusing on capital post-conviction cases. In addition to her work, Vernetta is involved with several local organizations including, the Durham People’s Alliance, the Durham Citizen’s Advisory Committee and the UNC School of Law Pro Bono Alumni Board. She is married to her wife, Courtney and the two have a daughter, Reese.
