Ever since Elaine Noble became the world’s first out state legislator in 1974, Massachusetts has been a hotbed for the equality movement. Pioneers like U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, State Sen. Jarrett Barrios, and Attorney General Maura Healey created new possibilities for queer people in government. Their work continues to drive our community, country, and movement forward.
This year, we have an opportunity to elect even more incredible out leaders across the Commonwealth, including:
• City Councilor Denise Simmons, former Mayor of Cambridge and the first Black, openly lesbian mayor in the country;
• Melrose School Committee Member Lizbeth Deselm, one of just two trans elected officials in Massachusetts;
• Springfield City Councilor Michael Fenton, who will likely face an anti-LGBTQ opponent; and
• Helene Vincent and Alejandra St. Guillen, who would be the first women elected to the Boston City Council
And that’s just the beginning. With 2020 around the corner, LGBTQ leaders and activists are preparing their campaigns and strategies in the coming year. We hope you join us to learn more and help pave the way.
