For almost 30 years, Victory Institute has helped to train, place and elect thousands of openly LGBTQ public officials at every level of government. Our leaders have been catalysts for expanding legal rights for LGBTQ people across the country, and they have transformed our nation’s policies and shifted our political landscape towards equality, one election at a time. Today, over 850 LGBTQ Americans are serving in elected office due to the work of Victory, including 7 Members of Congress, and the nation’s first two U.S. Senators. Victory’s work continues as LGBTQ people are severely underrepresented in all levels of government – serving in only 0.16% of all elected offices in the United States.

The Director of Constituent Engagement is an integral part of LGBTQ Victory Institute and will work directly with the Vice President and senior leadership across the organization to support, engage, and inform out LGBTQ elected and appointed officials serving around the world.

General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President of Victory Institute, the Director of Constituent Engagement will serve as a liaison between Victory Institute staff and the diverse global network of LGBTQ elected and appointed officials ensuring they are appropriately engaged in Victory programming and the work of the LGBTQ equality movement. This position will also lead Victory’s Presidential Appointments Initiative which works to achieve proportional representation for the LGBTQ community within a Presidential administration. The Director of Constituent Engagement will be part of a team of dedicated and committed staff who work hard at ensuring out elected and appointed officials have the tools they need to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary liaison between Victory and LGBTQ elected and appointed officials;
  • Develops engagement opportunities for elected/appointed officials to build relationships with each other, expand their policy knowledge, build their visibility, and connect with Victory including Victory’s Elected Officials Only summit and New Elected Leaders Orientation at the International LGBTQ Leaders Conference;
  • Works closely with Victory’s Presidential Appointments Initiative organizational partners to ensure proportional representation of LGBTQ leaders in future presidential administrations;
  • Builds and maintains a pipeline of qualified LGBTQ leaders into a presidential administration including recruitment, identification, vetting, preparing, and tracking of candidates;
  • Ensures that Victory’s Out for America map of LGBTQ+ elected officials is current and accurate;
  • Drafts, reviews and sends out all correspondence to LGBTQ elected and appointed officials on behalf of the organization including, but not limited to, invitations and requests;
  • Manages new and existing relationships with out elected and appointed officials;
  • Utilizes a variety of engagement tools to connect with rapidly expanding network of out public leaders including events, meetings, calls, and online communication;
  • Works with political, communications, and development teams as well as the Board of Directors to maximize opportunities and visibility for out public officials serving around the globe.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; plus at least five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent of education and experience;
  • Experience and commitment to working within a team to solidify engagement opportunities for elected and appointed officials;
  • Experience in working with as well as building and maintaining relationships with elected and appointed officials;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to manage responsibilities independently;
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leadership, elected/appointed officials and their staffs as well as appropriately handle confidential information;
  • Ability to cultivate positive working relationships internally and externally;
  • Ability to effectively represent the organization in meetings, trainings and media;
  • Dependable memory for details about people and their accomplishments;
  • Ease with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, including demonstrated comfort with databases, templates, formatting and data visualization;
  • Demonstrated passion for LGBTQ equality and public leadership;
  • Ability and willingness to travel;
  • Conversational and written fluency in Spanish is a plus.

The salary range for this position is $58,000 – $67,000.
