  • On Tuesday, Tammy Baldwin’s campaign announced they raised $3.7 million in the past three months, totaling more than $7.8 million cash on hand.
  • Baldwin faces more big money than every other Democratic incumbent combined, yet the fundraising numbers prove her message is resonating. GOP rival Kevin Nicholson announced he raised more than $1 million in the first quarter and state Sen. Leah Vukmir did not disclose.

  • A new poll by the Mellman Group has Lexington Mayor Jim Gray leading the pack for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. 52% of likely Democratic primary voters supported Gray.
  • Amy McGrath and state Sen. Reggie Thomastook took 19% and 6% respectively.  If elected, he will be the first openly LGBTQ Congressman from Kentucky.

Albuquerque’s Pat Davis Weeds Out Jail Time for Marijuana Use

  • On Thursday Albuquerque joined the 50 other U.S. cities that have passed measures to decriminalize marijuana. City Councilor Pat Davis had been working on a decriminalization ordinance since 2012 and with Mayor Tim Keller’s support, marijuana possession is capped at a $25 fine citywide.
  • Davis is a former police officer who’s made drug policy a central issue in his campaign for Michelle Lujan Grisham’s vacant seat in Congress. This policy is sure to distinguist Davis in a crowded primary — a 2016 Albuquerque Journal poll found that 61% of likely voters supported marijuana legalization with only 34% opposed.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot Wades Into Democratic Primary

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted that Sheriff Lupe Valdez will be his opponent despite the fact that we’re still weeks away from May 22 run-off. Abbott’s post included language about “border sovereignty” and “protecting the future of Texas” without  addressing Valdez’s platform. Valdez’s messaging remains focused on reminding voters that by not expanding Medicaid, Abbott cost Texan hospitals over $6.2 billion with devastating social and fiscal effects.

“Antonio, of Lakewood, is the superior choice. She is known as one of the hardest-working members of the legislature, and has been effective in working across the aisle, most notably in successfully co-sponsoring a law to open adoption records in Ohio and in her work on LGBT anti-discrimination legislation.”

The endorsement adds that her primary opponent, Martin “Sleazy” Sweeney, was absent from his interview. The paper has the largest circulation in Ohio.

Conversion Therapy Ban Clears Maine State House

Maine’s House of Representatives voted to pass a bill that seeks to ban conversion therapy for minors by therapists who aim to change sexual orientation or gender identity. State Rep. Ryan Fecteau has been the driving force behind the bill which passed in the House 76 to 68. It heads to the Senate next week, though an amendment supported by the Christian Civic League is already planned to try and remove any legislative teeth.

Jennifer Webb is a small business owner in south Pinellas County. This is her second run for this seat, having been the 2016 Democratic nominee and losing by 13 points to an incumbentavier. Now it is an open race and her chief primary opponent, attorney Javier Centonzio is dropping out and endorsing her. Web is endorsed by Reps. Carlos Guillermo-Smith & David Richardson and would be the first openly lesbian member of the Florida Legislature.

On Tuesday, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia overwhelmingly won re-election, obtaining 79% of the total votes cast. Mayor Garcia began his political career as a city councilmember in 2009 and served until elected as mayor in 2014 – he won 52% of the total votes cast. Garcia is celebrating his re-election with a 9-week break from City Hall to visit directly with constituents.
