Albuquerque’s Pat Davis Weeds Out Jail Time for Marijuana Use
On Thursday Albuquerque joined the 50 other U.S. cities that have passed measures to decriminalize marijuana. City Councilor Pat Davis had been working on a decriminalization ordinance since 2012 and with Mayor Tim Keller’s support, marijuana possession is capped at a $25 fine citywide.
Davis is a former police officer who’s made drug policy a central issue in his campaign for Michelle Lujan Grisham’s vacant seat in Congress. This policy is sure to distinguist Davis in a crowded primary — a 2016 Albuquerque Journal poll found that 61% of likely voters supported marijuana legalization with only 34% opposed.
