Deb Butler

North Carolina House of Representatives, District 18

Deb is a powerful voice for equality in the North Carolina State House

Biography

Representative Deb Butler has been an advocate for years, but has garnered recent national attention for her ‘I will not yield’ speech on the floor of the North Carolina House of Representatives. Those four little words, I WILL NOT YIELD have become somewhat of a national rallying cry for 2020, but make no mistake, Representative Butler has fought against the notorious ‘bathroom bill,’ against anti-choice legislation and in favor of increasing the minimum wage, increased teacher pay, and stronger environmental protections.

As a winner of the Tammy Baldwin Breakout Award, Representative Butler said: “This award is such an honor and it confirms that people in NC and all over this country are tired of the backroom deals and the gotcha style of politics. I just did what I knew to be right, and people appreciated it. There was no posturing or gamesmanship, I just saw an injustice unfolding and tried to stop it.”

Representative Butler serves as one of the Minority whips in the NC House and is eager to take the majority in 2020.

“North Carolina will be ground zero in 2020 and with good reason. People should train their attention on us because NC is going to play a pivotal role in the upcoming election season.”
