Ken Carlson

Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, District 4

Ken was the first out gay man elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors!

Biography

Ken’s been getting it done for our community for more than 30 years. He learned at an early age about giving back. His grandfather, James Moriarty, served Contra Costa as a County Supervisor. His mom was a registered nurse who cared for our most vulnerable at Hospice of the East Bay. Ken joined the Concord Police force, where he served for nearly 30 years, working as a neighborhood patrol officer and crisis negotiator to keep our families safe. In 2012, Ken’s neighbors elected him to the Pleasant Hill City Council, where he served as mayor and vice mayor. He made history as the city’s first openly gay councilmember and delivered a new library and park, upgraded our roads, and chaired the Council’s Economic Development subcommittee to bring new jobs to our community. In 2022, Ken’s neighbors elected him to the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors — again as the first LGBTQIA+ person to serve in that role. Ken knows what families are going through. That’s why he’s working every day as our Supervisor to protect our most vulnerable, protect our communities, and get results Contra Costa can count on.
