Michael was the first out gay man elected to the Springfield City Council!

Biography

Michael is a transactional attorney from Springfield, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of the Western New England University School of Law (Juris Doctorate, 2012), Western New England University School of Business (Masters in Business Administration, 2011) and Providence College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with cum laude honors (2009). He is well-recognized as an emerging leader, as is evidenced by his selection to be a Super Lawyers Rising Star (2014-2016), a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Top 25 Up and Coming Attorney (2014), and a BusinessWest 40 Under 40 award recipient (class of 2012).

Mike is the first out gay person elected to the City Council in Springfield, New England’s Fourth Largest City.  At 22 he became the youngest person ever elected to the Springfield City Council.  In 2014 he became the first openly gay person elected to be Springfield City Council President and at 26 years old, was the youngest City Council President in the City’s history.

The oldest of five children, Michael gives back to his community by serving in public office and on a variety of non-profit boards. Michael lives in Springfield with his husband, Jonathan Berthiaume, who works in brand strategy for a Fortune 100 company. They were married on September 3, 2016 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.
