Rebecca was the first out LGBTQ+ woman elected to the Cleveland City Council!
Biography
First elected in 2021, Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer is a lawyer, community advocate, and current member of the Cleveland City Council seeking a second term.
A Stanford Law School graduate (JD ’14), Maurer began her career in housing justice after personal experiences with a bad landlord. She worked as a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, representing tenants in eviction cases and advocating for housing reform. Maurer also played a key role in the push to reform Cleveland’s lead-safe housing laws after data showed Cleveland’s lead poisoning rates were worse than Flint, Michigan. She later worked as in-house counsel at the Student Borrower Protection Center, focusing on federal student loan policy.
In 2021, Maurer ran a grassroots campaign against a long-time incumbent, knocking doors on every street in Ward 12. Since taking office, she has focused on issues such as holding out-of-state landlords accountable, promoting commercial development in Cleveland, and improving city services in Ward 12. She is currently Vice Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and co-chair of the Lead Safe Advisory Board.
Councilwoman Maurer is committed to a more transparent and accountable city government, advocating for both local solutions and broader policy changes at City Hall.
