Erick Russell

Connecticut State Treasurer

Erick was the first Black out LGBTQ statewide elected official in the country!

Biography

As Connecticut’s State Treasurer, Erick Russell is focused on building the future Connecticut deserves — one where opportunity belongs to everyone. Erick grew up in a community where people relied on one another to get by. Working in his family’s small store, he saw firsthand how hard families worked and how deeply financial instability could shape people’s lives. Those experiences shaped his belief that the government should reflect the values of strong communities by expanding opportunity and delivering for everyone. Since being elected Treasurer, Erick has put those values into action. He has reformed the state’s pension funds, achieving the strongest investment performance in years while reducing long-term debt that once held Connecticut back. By stabilizing state finances, he has helped move Connecticut from paying for past mistakes to investing in its future. Erick also launched CT Baby Bonds, a first-in-the-nation program that invests directly in the future of Connecticut’s children in order to close the wealth gap. In 2022, Erick made history as the first Black out LGBTQ person elected to statewide office in American history. He lives in New Haven with his husband, Christopher, and their dog, Eleanor.
