Seattle Mayor Ed Murray on Friday named Dylan Orr, who is openly transgender, to lead Seattle’s new Office of Labor Standards.
Orr will be charged with protecting workers from wage theft, ensuring businesses comply with labor standards, and the implementation of the city’s new $15-an-hour minimum wage law.
Previously, Orr worked as the chief of staff at the federal Office of Disability Employment Policy within the U.S. Department of Labor.
“Dylan is an energetic and enthusiastic public servant committed to ensuring opportunity for all Americans and creating a world where each person’s contribution is valued,” said Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, who endorsed Orr’s appointment. “He believes in outreach and building coalitions, and recognizes that we all succeed only when we all succeed.”
Orr was the first openly transgender person to be appointed in a presidential administration.
