For over 31 years, LGBTQ Victory Fund and LGBTQ Victory Institute have helped to train, support and elect thousands of out LGBTQ elected officials at every level of government. Our leaders have been catalysts for expanding legal rights for LGBTQ people across the country, and they have transformed our nation’s policies and shifted our political landscape towards equality. Today, more than 1000 LGBTQ Americans are serving in elected office due to the work of Victory Fund and Victory Institute, including nine members of Congress, two U.S. senators and two governors.
Victory Fund and Victory Institute are seeking a Vice President of Communications who will report to the President & CEO and serve on the organizations’ leadership team. They will directly supervise the senior digital strategist, senior communications and marketing manager, and press secretary. The Vice President of Communications will set and guide communications strategy for the organizations, manage the communications team and serve as a spokesperson for the organizations. This includes leading the organizations’ media relations, digital and social media strategy, email fundraising and digital acquisitions, marketing efforts and a coming brand redesign. They will also lead communications and public relations efforts around fundraising and programmatic events and support LGBTQ candidates and elected officials with their communications needs.
The Vice President of Communications will ensure Victory is the essential voice on LGBTQ politics and LGBTQ representation in government. The ideal candidate will be proactive in seeking opportunities to expand the organizations’ media presence and brand, have a strong management and communications background and be committed to the mission.
Strong preference is given to applicants with existing journalistic relationships and for work within the LGBTQ movement and/or politics.
- Manage, mentor and lead a four-person (and growing!) communications team, with three direct reports;
- Develop and execute on a strategic communications plan that increases the visibility and brand awareness of the organizations and cultivates relationships with media and key influencers;
- Manage media relations efforts to secure beneficial coverage for the organizations, its candidates and elected officials;
- Oversee the organizations’ digital platforms strategy – including websites and social media;
- Supervise and support the low-dollar email marketing program, e-newsletter program, and the email and phone acquisition programs;
- Oversee and expand the suite of communications services available to candidates and elected officials and support their communications needs in rapid response and crisis communications situations;
- Establish a marketing strategy that prioritizes marketing collateral materials and increases brand awareness – including the development of the annual report and other publications;
- Support teams in narrative and set design related to programmatic and fundraising events;
- Lead the coming brand redesign for the organizations and ensure its proper implementation;
- Serve as a primary spokesperson and key point of contact in high-importance media situations; and
- Develop the annual budget for the communications department, establish staff performance goals and monitor staff performance.
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
- At least 10 years’ experience in media relations and communications; including experience in managing and growing a high-performing communications department;
- Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive communications plan, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals;
- Excellent and persuasive communicator who can connect with diverse audiences – from reporters to donors to board members;
- Ability to balance competing priorities and perform a wide variety of tasks over the course of the workday;
- Ability and willingness to work in rapid response situations where urgency is a necessity;
- Exceptional writing, proofreading and editing skills;
- Existing relationships with reporters is a major plus; and
- Interest in and knowledge of the LGBTQ movement and U.S. politics.
The position is based in Washington, DC.
The salary for this position is $120,000 – $140,000, commensurate with experience. Please include salary requirements in your materials.
